Casablanca’s Entrepreneurial Landscape: A Resilient and Evolving Ecosystem

Casablanca, Morocco’s economic powerhouse, continues to demonstrate a robust entrepreneurial spirit, reflecting both resilience and adaptability in its business landscape.

Steady Growth in Business Creation

Recent data indicates that the Casablanca-Settat region has maintained a consistent pace in the establishment of new enterprises. On average, approximately 24,000 new companies were created annually during 2022 and 2023, aligning closely with pre-pandemic levels observed between 2017 and 2019. This resurgence underscores the region’s capacity to rebound and sustain economic vitality.

Economic Contributions and Sectoral Insights

In 2023, active enterprises in the region generated a cumulative turnover nearing 1,400 billion dirhams, with a value added exceeding 269 billion dirhams. These figures represent year-on-year increases of 1.3% and 2.3%, respectively, highlighting a positive economic trajectory.

The commercial sector remains a cornerstone of Casablanca’s economy, accounting for 40% of the total turnover and 21% of the value added. Large enterprises play a significant role, contributing approximately 69% to the turnover and 67% to the value added, indicating a concentration of economic activity within major corporations.

Geographical and Demographic Dynamics

Casablanca’s centrality is evident, with the city housing 86% of the region’s active enterprises, generating 92% of the regional turnover and 94% of the value added. This concentration underscores Casablanca’s pivotal role in the national economy.

Employment data reveals that 80% of companies registered with the CNSS are based in Casablanca, employing 88% of the declared workforce. This highlights the city’s significance as a major employment hub.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite positive trends, the region faces challenges, notably an increase in business dissolutions, rising from an annual average of 2,500 before the pandemic to over 3,000 in the 2022-2023 period. This suggests a dynamic and competitive market environment.

Entrepreneurship among women shows promise, with 15.6% of active enterprises in the region led by women, closely aligning with the national average of 15.1%. However, disparities exist across provinces, indicating areas for targeted support and development.

Looking Ahead

Casablanca’s entrepreneurial ecosystem reflects a blend of resilience and ongoing evolution. While the city continues to be a beacon of economic activity, addressing challenges such as business sustainability and fostering inclusive growth will be crucial for sustaining its economic momentum.
