Casablanca’s Environmental Initiatives: A Sustainable Future in Progress

Casablanca is actively pursuing a range of environmental initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and mitigating climate change impacts. These efforts encompass waste management, pollution control, and renewable energy development.

Advancements in Waste Management

In a significant move to modernize waste management, Casablanca has launched a project to convert 4,000 tons of daily household waste into electricity. This initiative is expected to supply approximately 30% of the city’s public lighting and 20% of household energy needs, thereby reducing pollution from the Médiouna landfill and cutting carbon emissions.

Coastal Pollution Control

To protect its coastal environment, Casablanca has undertaken the East Coast Anti-Pollution Project. This involves constructing a 9 km wastewater interceptor using microtunnelling technology beneath the R322 corridor. The project aims to divert 300,000 cubic meters of industrial discharge per day, safeguarding the marine ecosystem and improving public health.

Renewable Energy Initiatives

Morocco, with Casablanca at the forefront, is committed to renewable energy development. The national strategy aims for renewables to constitute 64% of installed capacity by 2030. This includes extensive wind farms and the Ouarzazate photovoltaic plant, positioning the country as a leader in climate change preparedness.

Environmental Education

Recognizing the importance of environmental awareness, Casablanca has launched the second phase of the “Green Schools” program. This initiative targets 22 public schools and two charitable associations, installing waste sorting bins and promoting responsible environmental behaviors among students.

Through these comprehensive efforts, Casablanca is demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, setting an example for urban centers worldwide.
